Academic Graduation Requirements in the Quebec Youth Sector

PHILEMON WRIGHT STUDENTS:
The Work-Oriented Training Path (W.O.T.P.) consists of two different programs of education, Pre-Work and Semi-Skilled. Both of these pathways give students the opportunity to obtain practical training in the workplace while pursuing General Education in the Secondary Cycle One (Grades 7-8) curriculum adapted to their individual needs.
This pathway is different because it is practical in nature and it’s objective is immediate preparation for the job market. It gives students the opportunity to experience success in different contexts through adapted instruction. Students eligible for this path are at least 15 years of age before September 30th, and have experienced significant difficulties in English and Mathematics at the junior high school level. The student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) should also show that this training path is most likely to meet the student’s interests, needs and abilities.
Pre-Work Training:
This three-year program is designed for students whose report at the end of Secondary Cycle One shows that they have not met the requirements of the Elementary End-of-Cycle 3 (Grade 6) program evaluation for English and Mathematics. This training helps students to progress at their own pace in a variety of subjects while preparing them to carry out their roles as adults, citizens and workers. During the first year of the program students receive practical training within the school setting. The following two years involve a combination of school and workplace training. The student can achieve specific competencies related to different semi-skilled trades. Upon successful completion, students receive a Pre-Work Training certificate from the Ministry of Education.
Semi-Skilled Training:
This one-year program is intended for students who have met the requirements of the Elementary level End-of-Cycle 3 (Grade 6) program evaluations in English and Mathematics, but who have not met the requirements of Secondary Cycle One (Grades 7-8). Students work towards completing the requirements of Secondary Cycle One programs in English, French and Mathematics, at the same time as developing all the specific competencies required to carry out a semi-skilled trade of their choosing.
Students spend approximately half the year in school with the other half spent acquiring these work competencies in one specific trade off-site on work placement. Upon successful completion, students receive a Semi-Skilled Trade certificate with the specific trade indicated from the Ministry of Education.

Academic Support: Tutoring Services for Students
For any parents and/or students who are looking to acquire private tutoring services, we offer a variety of options to connect you with that support. Attached below is the list of tutors who have given their names for consideration. This list is made up of current PWHS/Hadley teaching staff, retired teaching staff, qualified substitute teachers, and students from University of Ottawa, Heritage College and even seniors at Philemon Wright. In order to acquire a tutor, please follow these steps:

– Choose between a teacher or student tutor (subject areas are listed therein);
– Contact the tutor directly via phone or e-mail (contact information listed therein);
– Negotiate rate, frequency & location (locations such as the cafeteria at the school can be used by tutors after school hours).
*Please note: Teachers are not permitted to provide paid tutoring service to students who are registered with them in classes during the school day.
Learn Quebec – free online support
Through LEARN Quebec, LEARN Tutoring provides online tutoring and homework help at no charge. This service is free for all English language learners in the province of Quebec. All Hadley and Philemon Wright students can request an online tutor.
Students can make a request for tutoring by going to Learn Quebec’s website here. Learn Quebec opens up their application for tutoring in the Fall, Winter and Spring.
There are many Adult-Education Centers where students can finish their course requirements for a Quebec High School Diploma OR upgrade and get pre-requisite courses for post-secondary program.
The Hull Adult Education Centre is the closest location to Philemon Wright High School and is within the same school board. You can find additional information or apply to register with them by going to their website here.
